Quena
In a relatively isolated location on the edge of the desert, about 2.5 km southwest of the modern town, stands a Greco-Roman temple, known in ancient Egypt as Lunit or Tantra. The site of the modern town was the capital of the Upper Egyptian province. Dendera dates back to the Predynastic period in Egypt. This is evidenced by the ancient tombs near the wall of the Temple of Hathor. Dendera was the capital of the Sixth Khor of Upper Egypt, and Hathor was its chief deity. The Hathor temple system dates back to the reign of Khufu, and was later restored by Pepi I.
